New MKSAP® Maintenance of Certification Modules

MKSAP MOC II

If you subscribe to MKSAP 15, you may use eight modules that are part of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification program. Completing each of these MKSAP Maintenance of Certification (MKSAP MOC II) modules qualifies you for 10 Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points in the program, for a total of 80 points.

In addition, if you also subscribe to MKSAP 14 Self-Assessment Updates, you can now answer the questions in Updates 3 and 4 to earn up to 40 Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points and up to 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. The Self-Assessment Updates are offered as an enhancement to MKSAP 14 and as part of the MKSAP 14 Complete package.

Besides being a subscriber to MKSAP 14 or 15, you must be enrolled in ABIM’s Maintenance of Certification program to earn Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points.

You can use combinations of the MKSAP MOC II Modules MKSAP 14 Self-Assessment Updates 3 and 4 to earn up to 80 Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points, the maximum permitted. Or, if you prefer, you can combine the MKSAP MOC II Modules with the ABIM Medical Knowledge Modules, including the new ABIM Annual Update Modules.

Here is how to earn your points:

  • To earn points with the MKSAP MOC II Modules, you will need to provide your ABIM Maintenance of Certification program registration number after clicking on the “Download MKSAP MOC II” button below and after downloading the MKSAP MOC II Modules. You will also need either your membership number or the username and password that are associated with your MKSAP 14 subscription. After successfully completing each MKSAP MOC II Module, you will be able to submit your answers directly to ABIM.

  • To earn points with MKSAP 14 Self-Assessment Updates 3 and 4, you will need to download the Updates from the following site: http://mksap.acponline.org/updates/. After answering all of the questions, you can submit for the points on line by filling out a special window that will appear at the bottom of the answer sheet. Remember: You will need to provide your ABIM candidate number. On this same page, you can also submit online for up to 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

MKSAP cannot be used to earn points toward the ABIM’s requirement for Self-Evaluation of Practice Performance. Information on Self-Evaluation of Practice Performance is available at the ABIM Web site at www.abim.org/moc/mocsepp.aspx. For complete details about the ABIM Maintenance of Certification program, visit www.abim.org/moc/.

Not yet a MKSAP 14 or MKSAP 15 Subscriber?

If you have not yet purchased MKSAP 14 or MKSAP 15, become a subscriber.
Note: Please allow 1-2 business days to process your order prior to proceeding to download the modules.

MKSAP 14 Subscribers:

Keep in mind that MKSAP 14 or MKSAP 15 Self-Assessment Updates 3 and 4 are the only current MKSAP options that allows you to simultaneously earn Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points and CME credit. To earn CME credit for MKSAP 14 or MKSAP 15, follow the instructions you received with your MKSAP 14 programs. Completing MKSAP MOC II Modules for Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points does not qualify you for additional CME credit. Nor do Updates 1 and 2 qualify you for Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points.

What Is New About the MKSAP MOC II Modules

The new MKSAP MOC II Modules consist of eight Modules, including four that test knowledge of multidisciplinary office-based care and four that test knowledge of multidisciplinary inpatient care. Each MKSAP MOC II Module offers fewer points than each of the original MKSAP MOC Modules (10 instead of 20) but involves fewer questions (25 instead of 60). The MKSAP MOC II Modules are modeled after the ABIM Update Modules, each of which also involves 25 questions and 10 Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points.

Accessing the MKSAP MOC II Modules

To access the MKSAP MOC II Modules:

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the MKSAP MOC II Modules worth only 10 points each?
There are fewer questions. The new MKSAP MOC II Modules qualify you for only 10 points each because each Module involves only 25 questions, instead of the 60 questions included in the original 20-point MKSAP MOC Modules. The MKSAP MOC II Modules are modeled after the ABIM Update Modules. The number of Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points is determined by ABIM.

Who can access the MKSAP MOC II Modules?
Only MKSAP 14 or MKSAP 15 subscribers can access these Modules.

Where and how do I access the MKSAP MOC II Modules?
You can access the MKSAP MOC II Modules by clicking on the "Download MKSAP MOC II" button above.

How are the MKSAP MOC II Modules different from the ABIM Modules?
The MKSAP MOC II Modules provide an alternative option for earning Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points toward completion of the ABIM Maintenance of Certification program. The MKSAP MOC II Modules offer evidence-based critiques that provide immediate feedback, explaining the correct and incorrect options. It is worth noting that the ABIM Modules now provide evidence-based rationales for the correct answers upon successful completion of the ABIM Module.

How many Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points can I earn using the MKSAP MOC II Modules?
You may use all eight of the available 25-question MKSAP MOC II Modules to earn 80 Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points. Each Module allows you to earn 10 Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points. After completing a MKSAP MOC II Module, you will be able to submit your answers to the ABIM directly from within the Module, provided you have enrolled in the ABIM Maintenance of Certification program. The MKSAP MOC II Modules cannot be used to earn points toward Self-Evaluation of Practice Performance. Information on Self-Evaluation of Practice Performance is available at the ABIM website at www.abim.org/moc/mocsepp.aspx.

If I use the MKSAP MOC II Modules to earn Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points, do I need to pay any additional fees to ABIM?
Not if you are enrolled in the ABIM Maintenance of Certification program. Only physicians enrolled in the ABIM Maintenance of Certification program can submit MKSAP MOC II Modules for these points. ABIM does not charge a fee for the MKSAP MOC II Modules because these are not ABIM products. The College charges no additional fee for using and submitting the completed MKSAP MOC II Modules once you have subscribed to MKSAP 14 or MKSAP 15 through the College. For information about fees for the ABIM Maintenance of Certification program, please visit www.abim.org/moc/policies.aspx

Can I earn CME credits by completing the MKSAP MOC II Modules?
No. Because the MKSAP MOC II questions are derived from the regular MKSAP 14 or MKSAP 15 programs, they cannot be used to simultaneously earn CME credits and Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points. Regular MKSAP 14 or MKSAP 15 questions can be answered to earn Category 1 Credits™. The MKSAP MOC II Modules can be answered to earn up 80 Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points in the ABIM Maintenance of Certification program. ABIM Modules can also be used to earn CME credits. For complete information, please visit www.abim.org/moc/policies.aspx.

Can I earn Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points for my work on MKSAP 14 or MKSAP 15?
No. Only CME credits—not Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points—are available by answering the regular MKSAP 14 or MKSAP 15 program questions. If you are a MKSAP 14 or MKSAP 15 subscriber, you can earn Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points by using the MKSAP MOC II Modules.

Where and how do I access MKSAP 14 Self-Assessment Updates 3 and 4?
Access to MKSAP 14 Self-Assessment Updates 3 and 4 is available at http://mksap.acponline.org/updates/

How are MKSAP 14 Self-Assessment Updates 3 and 4 different from the ABIM Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge Modules?
MKSAP Self-Assessment Updates 3 and 4 provides an option for earning Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points toward completion of the ABIM Maintenance of Certification Program. Updates 3 and 4 questions offer evidence-based critiques that provide immediate feedback, explaining the correct and incorrect options. In addition, the questions in Updates 3 and 4 provide an opportunity to earn up to 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. It is worth noting that the ABIM Update Modules now provide evidence-based rationales for the correct answers upon successful completion of the Module.

How many Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points can I earn using the MKSAP 14 Self-Assessment Updates?
You can use MKSAP 14 Self-Assessment Updates 3 and 4 to earn up to 40 Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points. After completing a MKSAP 14 Self-Assessment Update, you can submit your answers to ABIM directly from within the Update, provided you have enrolled in the ABIM Maintenance of Certification Program.

Can I earn CME credits by completing MKSAP 14 Self-Assessment Updates 3 and 4?
Yes. Because the questions are unique to the Updates and answered once, you can use them to simultaneously earn up to 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ and 20 Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge points for each Update.
